Moong dhal payasam

Moong dhal Payasam:

Moong dhal / Payatham paruppu payasam is a sweet dessert. Generally on the days of fast my mom makes this dish for naivedyam and its distributed to all members of family as a Prasad. Today being a Sivarathri I am posting this recipe.


Moong dhal – 1 cup
Water – 1 ½ cup
Milk – 1 ½ cup
Jaggery – 1 cup (you can add more if you want it to be sweet)
Cardomom – 3
Ghee – 1 tsp
Cashew, dry grapes – few


Boil milk and bring it to room temperature.
Powder the jaggery, mix it with little water and stir it continuously in low flame until it turns to a syrup like state.
Filter the jaggery to remove any kind of impurities


Dry roast the moong dhal till golden brown.
Boil the roasted moong dhal with water till becomes mushy.
Add  jaggery with the moong dhal and continue to cook
When it becomes thick add milk, powdered cardomom and turn off the flame after one boil.
Heat ghee, fry cashew and dry grapes in it. Add this to the dish.
Serve it hot or cold.
