Vella Adai / Sweet Adai



Vella Adai / Sweet Adai:

On the day of Karadaiyan Nombu (Savitri Vratham) this sweet is prepared for naivedyam. On this nombu, all married women pray for the well being of their husband and unmarried women pray to get a good husband. Now let me go into the recipe.



Ingredients:

Rice flour - 2 cups
Jaggery- 2 cups
Water- 1 cup
Powder cardamom – 1 tsp
Grated coconut- 1 cup
Cow peas (Red karamani) - ¼ cup

Preparation:

Soak cow peas overnight and pressure cook it for 5 whistles (till soft).
Heat a pan and add the rice flour to it, roast it till its golden brown. Keep it aside.
Powder the jaggery, mix it with little water and stir it continuously in low flame until it turns to syrup like state. Drain it to remove any impurities.

Method:

Bring the water to boil, the ratio of water and rice flour is 1:2.
Slowly add the rice flour to it and mix well so that no lumps are formed.
Now add the jaggery syrup, grated coconut, cooked cow peas, powdered cardamom and mix well in slow flame till all water is absorbed and it thickens.
Allow it to cool.
Now make a small lemon sized balls out of it, faltten it and make a impression with your finger on the center.
Steam it in a cooker for 10 minutes.

Serve it hot with butter J
