Vazhaipoo / plantain / Banana flower Vadai:

When ever I bring vazhaipoo home, I divide into two halves after chopping the flowers. One half I make vazhaipoo paruppu usili and other half vazhaipoo vadai.


Vazhai poo – 1
Chana dhal – 1 cup
Red chilli – 2
Curry leaves – few
Turmeric powder – ½ pinch
Asafotedia / hing – a pinch
Coriander leaves - few
Salt – to taste
Fennel seeds- 1 tsp
Corn flour – 1 tsp


Wash and soak chana dhal for 2 hours.
Now grind chana dhal in a mixie with red chilli, curry leaves, turmeric powder, Asafotedia, salt with out adding water.

Vazhaipoo must be chopped into fine pieces for vadai.


To the grind-ed dhal add chopped vazhaipoo, few curry leaves, coriander leaves, fennel seeds and mix well to make vadai batter.
Grease your palms with little water, make a small ball out of the vadai batter and flatten it between your palms.
In a Kadai heat oil. When hot, drop the vadai carefully and cook in medium flame. Fry both sides until golden brown and until it cooks well inside.


You can add finely chopped onions.

You can enjoy it with any chutney of your choice J
