Sambhar Powder / Sambhar Podi

Sambhar Podi:

Sambhar Powder is mandatory in a South Indian Kitchen and Sambhar cannot be thought of without the home made sambhar powder. My mom does sambhar powder in bulk by drying ingredients under the sun and grinding it in a commercial grinding mill but now a days it is tough to find a grinding mill nearby. So I tried making Sambhar powder at home using a blender and it turned out best. Henceforth I started grinding sambhar powder in small quantity at home itself – hygienic and easy too.

Here goes the recipe…..

Dhaniya – 3 cups
Red chilli – 5 cups
Toor dhal – 1 cup
Chana dhal – 1 cup
Black pepper – ½ cup
Mustard – ¼ cup
Fenugreek seeds- 1 tsp
Turmeric – 5 sticks

Dry roast all the ingredients one by one in a pan. Keep it in simmer to avoid ingredients getting blackend.
Allow it to cool and grind it in a mixie to fine powder.

Sambhar podi is ready. Store it in an air tight box  J

Turmeric sticks can be replaced by Turmeric powder.
If you are using powder turmeric, you need not dry roast it.
Instead of dry roasting all the ingredients, keep it in sun for 4 to 5 days and then grind in a blender.
