Tomato Thokku / Thakkali Thokku

Tomato Thokku  / Thakkali Thokku:

Tomato Thokku is very simple recipe, one of my hubby’s favourite side dishJ

It is mouth watering, colorful, appetizing side dish and goes well with idli, dosa, chappati, curd rice, upma, adai, parathas and also can be used as a spread for sandwich.  It can be stored in fridge for 2 weeks. Let me go into the details of the recipe….


Tomato – 4 (Select red juicy tomatoes for this recipe if possible)
Onion -1 (medium sized)
Ginger Garlic Paste – 1 tsp
Chillies – 4
Curry leaves – handful
Oil – 3 to 4 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Jeera – ½ tsp
Asafotedia – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Chilli powder – 4 tsp (I use the kashmiri variety)
Dhaniya powder – 1 tsp
Fenugreek powder – ½ tsp
Salt – to taste


Chop the onions into fine pieces.
Slice the tomatoes into small pieces
Slit the green chillies.


Heat oil in a heavy bottom pan.
When hot add mustard seeds and when it splutters, add  jeera, asafotedia  and wait for a minute.
Now add onion, curry leaves, ginger garlic paste, slit green chillies and sauté till onions turn pink.
Now add the sliced tomatoes and saute it well.
Add salt, turmeric powder, dhaniya powder, chilli powder, fenugreek powder and sauté well.
Remember to put the flame in medium and sauté it till the oil starts oozing out from the sides.
Switch off the flame and let it to cool.

Store it in an container in refrigerator for 2 weeks. 

Tomato Thooku / Thakkali Thokku is ready to serve.
